I hit the dirt and set off running. My plan took longer than I anticipated and the enemy got closer than I wanted them to. That didn’t matter. I had to lose them in the maze of streets before they caught me.

I veered around one corner after another. Every time I spotted a vehicle, cart, or wheelbarrow, I headed for it. I vaulted over the ones I could and skittered around the others. I put as many obstacles between myself and my pursuers as I could without ever actually losing sight of them.

More than once, I doubled back through alleys and shortcuts to observe them. They missed their turns and split off until their numbers dwindled. I ducked behind a taco stand until Mateo and four of his companions ran past me.

I checked my surroundings and hopped into view. I deliberately kicked over a vat of pozole. The proprietor rounded on me, yelling, “Hey!”

Mateo and his comrades checked their flight exactly the way I knew they would. They looked over and saw me standing there as plain as day. I glanced right and left like I’d been caught with my pants down. Then I bolted with Mateo hot on my heels.

Now when I checked over my shoulder, I spotted him glaring at me with his jagged teeth bared. He recognized me and his eyes narrowed. That’s right, asshole. Come on.

I played the same dodge and dive game until Mateo had to separate from his men, too. Two of them split off down a side street. That left Mateo and one other. I led them on for over a mile until I rounded a theater. I pretended to run down an alley, slid sideways, and doubled back.

Mateo and his accomplice halted at the entrance to look around. Mateo said something to his friend and waved to his left. The man continued down the street while Mateo tiptoed into the alley.

This was the moment I’d been waiting for. I stepped into view and confronted the bastard one on one. His eyes lit up when he saw me. He still held a pistol in one hand, but he didn’t raise it.

“Ah, my stupid fucking Americano friend!” he crowed. “I should have known it was you causing all this trouble. Did you come back for another taste of my taser?”

“You can tase me all you like, Mateo,” I told him. “You’re finished.”

“Finished! My friend, I’m only getting started,” he returned. “Do you think one man alone can stop the Trejos’?”

“I’m not trying to stop the Trejos’,” I replied. “Just you.”

“Me!” His hand flew to his heart and he laughed. “What did I ever do to you, my friend? I never laid a finger on you.”

“No, but you laid it on enough other people.”

He pursed his lips to hold back his smile. He didn’t take any of this seriously and why should he? He beat me once, but that was with five other guys helping him out. He might have a gun, but he wouldn’t walk away from this unscathed—not as long as I had anything to say about it.
